Songs of days gone by
by Alice McKiel

Here are a few songs Grandma used to sing while she knitted me a scarf or mittens

BLUE VELVET BAND

Come listen a story I'll tell you
Of a girl who lived in this land,
Of a girl who once was my sweetheart
She was known as "The Blue Velvet Band"

Her cheeks were the first blush of nature
He beauty it seemed to expand
Her hair hung down in long tresses
Tied back by a Blue Velvet Band.

I can still see those tears when we parted
Of my heartbroken Blue Velvet Band
As I left her, I told her I'd never
Come back to my old homeland again.

Five years in the wide open spaces
Were all that my poor heart could stand.
Each night as I lay on my pillow,
I would dream of my Blue Velvet Band.

One night as I lay there thinking
Of home and poor mom and dad
Like a flash, by my bedside was standing,
The form of My Blue Velvet Band.

I left next day for my sweetheart
To go back and make her my bride-
But when I reached the old depot,
They told me my sweetheart had died.

They laid her to rest in the graveyard,
'Neath the sweet smelling flowers of the land,
On her finger was the ring that I gave her,
On her head was he Blue Velvet Band
